The proposed Digital Omnibus simplification package, published in November 2025, may adjust some of these timelines, but the direction of travel is clear: if you deploy AI that touches EU citizens, you need to understand your obligations.

The UK's approach is deliberately different. Rather than a single comprehensive AI Act, the government has opted for a principles-based, sector-led framework. Five cross-sectoral principles — safety, transparency, fairness, accountability, and contestability — are applied by existing regulators (the ICO, FCA, CMA, Ofcom, MHRA, and others) within their respective domains. As of February 2026, these principles remain non-statutory, meaning they're not yet backed by specific legislation.

With AI systems increasingly synthesising answers from web content rather than sending users to websites, your online presence needs to work differently. Create authoritative, well-structured, expert content that AI systems will cite. Maintain your Google Business Profile meticulously. Build brand recognition that exists independently of search rankings, because the way people find and choose businesses is fundamentally changing.

Plan for the regulation that's coming, not just the regulation that exists. If you operate in the EU or serve EU customers, the AI Act obligations are real and imminent. In the UK, the principles-based framework means existing laws already apply to AI use. Documenting your AI decisions, maintaining human oversight, and building explainability into your processes is sensible governance regardless of what specific legislation emerges.

Don't wait for perfection — but don't rush for the sake of rushing. The UK government's SME Digital Adoption Taskforce calculated that a mere 1% productivity uplift across UK SMEs would add £94 billion annually to GDP.
